Not far from Barcelona, in the central part of Catalonia, the majestic, bizarrely shaped Montserrat massif rises, the highest peak of which, Sant Jeroni Peak, is located at an altitude of 1,236m above sea level. The amazing shapes of the rocks of the mountain range, which are difficult to take your eyes off, are the result of a long geological evolution. The array extends 10 km length and 5 km width, and its perimeter is equal to approximately 25 km.
This is one of the most important symbols of Catalonia, a unique mountain range of enchanting beauty, the place where the Benedictine monastery is located, hospitably opening its doors to visitors. It is a spiritual symbol and the religious center of Catalonia, a pilgrimage center for Catholics all over the world. Rich and diverse, sometimes even discouraging ensemble Montserrat attracts not only for its cultural and artistic wealth, but and religious and humanistic value, which is closely related national consciousness of the Catalan people.
"La Moreneta" (Dark-skinned), as the Holy Virgin is familiarly called because of the dark color of her face, is a carved wooden figure in the Romanesque style of the late 12th-early 19th century. 13 centuries. For a Christian familiar with the Holy Scriptures, the sacred image embodies the "bride" from the Old Testament "Song of Songs," who is "dark-skinned and "beautiful," according to the words of the biblical author included in the church liturgy. The image, radiating calm and austere beauty, most likely acquired this coloring due to the slow oxidation of the varnish covering his face and hands, under the influence of time, candles and lamps, which for many years illuminated the cramped Romanesque church.
